Josephine Bernoth-Doolan - Couples & Individuals, including ASD & ADHD Relationship Counselling
BPsySc(Hons), M.Couns (underway), Advanced Clinical Training (Gottman Level 2), ACA
Josephine holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science and a Masters of Counselling (underway); and utilises skills from both - bringing strong clinical skills, a depth of understanding of psychological sciences, and a warm, non-judgemental presence to her work. She has a special interest in ASD, ADHD and how these can play out in relationships, and has quickly become respected by clients and others for her insights, skill - and conversational manner of breaking down hard science into understandable and usable tools. She believes that meaningful change happens when people feel understood, supported, and empowered to grow. A neuro-affirming counsellor, she is deeply passionate about helping neurodiverse and neurotypical individuals and couples to improve the way they communicate, and has authored articles on these topics. She helps people feel safe enough to explore difficult conversations while building the skills needed for deeper connection.
As a neurodiverse counsellor, Josephine has a particular interest in supporting neurodiverse individuals and couples. She takes a neuro-affirming approach, helping partners better understand how differences in communication, sensory processing, and emotional experience can shape relationship dynamics. Many couples find that developing this shared understanding opens the door to greater compassion and teamwork. In fact, Josephine has authored a number of articles regarding the neurodiverse experience. (See her article on how ADHD and ASD are linked to increased ‘Thought Crime’ and the impact for individuals and relationships here).
Josephine also works comfortably with couples exploring relationship structures and styles of intimacy. She approaches these conversations with openness, professionalism, and respect, creating a safe space for couples to thoughtfully explore what works best with consensual risk awareness.
In her work, Josephine draws on person-centred therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness practices, and gradual confidence-building through gentle exposure to new experiences. She believes that meaningful change happens when people feel understood, supported, and empowered to grow.
A safe and trusted pair of hands, Josephine holds multiple qualifications which undergird her practice - she has completed a bachelor degree in Psychological Science (with Honours), and undertaken Advanced Clinical Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy Level 2. She has further deepened her understanding and skill through a Masters of Counselling degree, which is currently nearing completion. Whilst technically a ‘provisional’ counsellor, her years of study and professional development - as well as her in-depth personal experiences of neurodiversity - position her as a highly accomplished and deeply understanding practitioner.
Outside of the therapy room, Josephine enjoys writing and reading, and while she resists calling herself a cinephile, she has a deep appreciation for film and storytelling. She also enjoys bouldering and rock climbing with her partner, going to the gym with her mother, and occasionally losing track of time over a game of solitaire.
Josephine offers both in-person and Telehealth (ie Zoom) appointments.
